Sol LeWitt in Akron

According to the PD, Sol LeWitt will be creating a mural for the newly renovated Akron Art Museum. Clearly this is a big coup for Akron, to have this world-renowned artist create an exclusive piece for their building that was itself created by the famous Coop Himmelb(l)au architects.

The mural, which will measure 18 feet high by 34 feet across, will fill a wall on the lobby's north side. The design consists of intersecting triangular areas of color subdivided in a multi-colored brick pattern.

A grant from the Gregory Hackett Family Foundation will enable the museum to create the mural according to LeWitt's instructions. After technicians spend 10 days preparing the wall, a specialist from LeWitt's studio will come to Akron and direct five local artists in the process of drawing and painting the design on the wall. Fabricating the mural will take about three weeks.

I hope that they will recruit new, up-and-coming artists to contribute to this museum as well. It's a great little contemporary arts museum in a little city. This could really be a catalyst for Akron's growth in the arts.
